Old Rake Hush
Old Rake Hush
Hydraulic mining was a primary means of getting lead ore out of the ground from veins near the surface. The waters of Notion Gill were dammed and diverted to cut both North Rake Hush and Old Rake Hush. A stream's erosive power goes as a high power of its flow rate, so by damming and then releasing water, the surface drift could be washed away much more effectively than by the slow effects of normal flows, leaving the entire lead mining area cut by deep scars like this one which now carries no stream.
