NY9401 : Bunton Hush above the entrance to Bunton Level

Bunton Hush above the entrance to Bunton Level
Bunton Hush is a relic of hydraulic mining where the overburden was stripped off by releasing dammed water, and predates most of the underground workings. Bunton Level is open and is explored by mining groups for some distance.

Although there is a nicely graded track from Melbecks Moor above, dropping to the main bridleway in Gunnerside Gill, that is only classed as a footpath, and the bridleway comes down Bunton Hush itself, providing a very steep and rocky challenge for mountain bikers. The current generation, with full suspension bikes, seem to relish the experience, but twenty years ago, with a rigid frame bike, the footpath seemed a much safer option to me !
