Ynys Onnen and Ynys Meicel, Strumble Head
Ynys Onnen and Ynys Meicel, Strumble Head
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path approaches Strumble Head from the south. The view across Carreg Onnen Bay is framed by the two islands, Ynys Onnen and Ynys Meicel (with the lighthouse), and Pen Caer, the tip of the mainland. The lighthouse is connected with the mainland by a footbridge (not normally publicly accessible). The dark rocks on the left of Ynys Onnen are called Carreg Onnen and lend their name to the bay.

The present lighthouse at Strumble Head was built in 1908. Originally, it had a flame at the centre of a rotating assembly of Fresnel lenses LinkExternal link supported on a bath of mercury and driven by a counterweight. The lenses are still in place, but both the light and the drive mechanism are now electrically operated and remote controlled from Trinity House's operation centre in Harwich.
