A juvenile Gannet of the Moray Firth (Morus bassanus)
This immature gannet is from the group which represents the biggest of the European seabirds. Its forward facing eyes and cushioned head and neck equip the bird to pinpoint fast-moving fish and dive headlong to catch them. Sometimes they will dive from heights around the seventy foot mark. A highly sociable bird, the Gannet is related to the Pelican. The fishermen of the east coast of Scotland often refer to them as Solans or Solan Geese.
