Holliday Hall, Swanton Street
Holliday Hall, Swanton Street
This house is described in "Buildings of England" as "a fabulous display of virtuoso brickwork on the front of what is hardly more than a cottage ... how the parapet curves up to gain a third storey in the centre; how the windows sport aprons below and exaggerated key-blocks above, balancing absurd brace-like projections on their heads; how doorways and windows are rounded and rusticated for emphasis. Indeed everything is emphasised, which is what makes one love the design but not respect the designer too much." The fancy facade was added in 1719.
