"Cried Like Babes Bydam to Hear What Happened at Babraham"
This is a statue of Jonas Webb a Suffolk man born in 1796 his life-long ambition was to breed better sheep, an ambition he fully achieved. A council member of the Royal Agricultural Society he gained surprising popularity in France by giving a prize Ram to Napoleon III. Could a fondness for sheep be one of the dark deeds Rupert Brooke poked fun at in his famous poem about Grantchester? See LinkExternal link The statue was first erected in Peas Hill Cambridge but after some peregrinations it came to Webb's adopted home of Babraham. Jonas Webb died on his birthday in 1862.
