SU1042 : Stonehenge Visitor Centre main entrance
taken 9 years ago, 3 km from Larkhill, Wiltshire, England
The visitor centre is about 2km from Stonehenge itself, regular shuttle buses run along roads which are closed to most other traffic. The journey is included in the price of your ticket. Or you can walk, initially along roads, then across fields. We walked which should take half an hour, but in reality takes longer as you stop to take in the view. We returned on the bus which was much quicker.
The Stonehenge World Heritage Site is operated by English Heritage. They invested £27 million in a new visitor centre at Airman's Cross about 2km from the stone circle, which opened in December 2013. It has large coach and car parks, and visitors are required to walk or take a free shuttle bus from there to see the stones themselves.
The old visitor centre close to the stones was then demolished, and the road that passed close to the stones was removed and turned back to grassland.
