The bridge has long been replaced by an adjoining bridge downstream which carries the A2 (Newcastle to Kilkeel Road). The old bridge was the scene of a massacre of Presbyterian prisoners in 1641. There is public access from the north from the National Trust path to the old bridge but not beyond it.
