Waun y Griafolen - 'heath of the mountain ash' is a maze of peat hags and half-hidden water courses. Even in the driest of weather, there is no 'straight across' route over the Waun, despite the depiction of a path on the map. It takes time and patience to work ones way across and even the wearing of a newish pair of up-market walking boots and gaiters is no guarantee of dry feet by the end of the journey.
