Butter Hill Bridge and Vinyl Works, Carshalton, Surrey
This interesting photograph shows Butter Hill Bridge over the River Wandle, and the premises of Vinyl Products Limited, where 'VCM' was manufactured. VCM stands for Vinyl Chloride Monomer, which is a liquid from which the polymer PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) is made. The VCM was transported from here by road tanker. It is doubtful whether this activity would now be permissible, as VCM is now known to be a carcinogen.
