This shows sluices which were used to control the level on the Wandle and thus the admission of water to the vinyl works, part of whose plant can be seen in the gap between the foreground buildings.
TQ2865 : Butter Hill Bridge and Vinyl Works, Carshalton, Surrey VCM is indeed a carcinogen and is noted to cause a rare tumour - angiosarcoma of the liver (arsenic, thorotrast and anabolic steroids also do this). Most doctors will probably never see a case of this.
