Newburn Leisure Centre
Also known as Newburn Activity Centre. It was built on the site of Newburn Football Club's ground in the 1980s. The first of the Centre's two stages was completed in 1985, comprising changing rooms, management and staff facilities, a function room and car parking. The second phase was completed in 1989, with the completion of the sports hall, storage and ancillary facilities. The Centre was formally opened in 1987 by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
Indoor facilities include a 12 metre high climbing wall, the Impulse fitness suite and facilities for a wide range of traditional sport and leisure activities. The Realform climbing wall includes 13 separate route lines incorporating realistic cracks, grooves and arêtes lines with a mid height ledge for multi pitch climbing. Among others, the centre is home to several popular clubs such as Elswick Harriers Athletic Club, Newburn Judo Club, and Newburn Archery Club.
