Waste tips and causeway at Tyllau Mwn Mine
This mine began life in the 18thC as a trial mine for copper. It was then owned by an indomitable English woman by the name of Elizabeth Baker and was called by her Friar's Coat. The trial came to naught. Later from the 1870s to 1920, the site was worked intermittently for bedded oolitic ironstone with magnetite.
The causeway in the foreground ends abruptly in a bog. The mine forms the subject of the 9th field trip on the following link.
