Looking towards Town Bridge and the Church of St Botolph.
The former Town Bridge was a wooden structure, which in 1771 had come to a dangerous state. In 1772, great improvements were made in the approach to the bridge from the Market Place, which after many expensive repairs, the last of which, in 1795, cost about 500. In August 1800, it was agreed by Boston Corporation to replace it with a more substantial iron structure. Building commenced in 1802 and the site of it is a little south of the old one, which remained standing until the new one was completed.
The abutments of the new bridge were founded 1.2m below the deepest part of the bed of the Witham, and every precaution was taken to render the foundations and the superstructure secure.
The new bridge, which was opened for carriages 2nd of May, 1807, consists of one arch of cast-iron. The arch, which is the small segment of a circle, is 26.36m in span and the breadth of the bridge, including the cornice on each side, is 12m.
The expense of erecting this bridge, including the purchasing the site for the abutments, and the buildings to be removed for the approaches, was nearly 22,000.
Great difficulty was experienced in taking up the foundation of the pier of the old bridge and after several unsuccessful attempts the last of the piles forming the foundation was drawn up in the summer of 1818.
