Gully in the peat, Birks Moss, Marsden
Gully in the peat, Birks Moss The process seems to be that rainwater soaks through the peat until it reaches bedrock. Then it flows down the surface of the rock, making a tunnel under the peat. Occasionally a vertical hole forms down through the peat, and the wet surface of the rock, with deposits of sand, can be seen. These are a potential danger to walkers. Eventually the peat collapses over a tunnel, and a gully opens out as pictured here.
