SN1833 : The Crymych Arms

The Crymych Arms
The Crymych Arms
The inn gave its name to the village, having long stood at the convergence of six roads crossing the upland area of Pembrokeshire, and must served many a drover, farmer and traveller as a meeting place and a stop-over. When the railway arrived in 1875 the inn gained in importance but it has survived the closing of the line and remains the only hostelry in this isolated community.
Update: I have no reason not to believe the following information which appears on the Book Sleuth website, contributed by 'Ilyan'
"While exiled from Ethiopia, the Emperor Haile Selassie was in Crymych Arms as a refugee in 1937. There were three young Welsh speaking men who rotated to be an armed guard for that Symbol of Resistance for another Nation, until Selassie asked that the gun went away.
There would be quite a problem communicating from Welsh to Abyssinian. Alun Thomas, a professional Communist, who had not spoken Welsh since he was five, persuaded the young men to be guards, that was before the evacuees brought English into the monoglot welsh families."
The National Council for Civil Liberties, now Liberty, had sent out a circular asking for cheap secure lodgings for the Emperor of Abyssinia. perhaps they funded the cheap lodgings. Perhaps the Communist connection agitated the Security Services so that the Emperor's funding increased and he moved to a fishing inn near Bath."
