Rusty fuel tank
Rusty fuel tank
In farm use, it is located on the former runway of RAF Rackheath. The aerodrome was equipped with two aviation fuel installations. One was situated on the eastern edge of the flying field north of Dakenham Hall and consisted of two vertical drum type tanks holding 26,000 gallons each. The second fuel installation was south of the southeastern-most spectacle hardstanding and comprised six 12,000 gallon horizontal cylinder tanks on concrete rafts either semi buried in a group and mounded or surface mounted. The single tank depicted here would seem to have come from that location.
RAF Rackheath (USAAF Station 145)

Rackheath aerodrome was built by John Laing & Son Ltd on the estate of Sir Edward Stracy of Rackheath Hall. Built to the specifications of a Class-A heavy bomber airfield it was used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). The station opened in March 1944 and was designated USAAF Station 145. The station became the home of the 467th Bombardment Group (Heavy), the third group in the 96th Combat Wing, Second Bombardment Division (later Air Division) of the Eighth Air Force of the United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe (USSTAF).
