Calke Abbey
Calke Abbey
Although it was built on the site of an Augustinian priory, Calke was never an abbey and only had the title bestowed upon it by the owners in 1808. The house as seen today was basically built between 1701 and 1704. The National Trust acquired the property in 1985 after the owners, the Harpur-Crewe family, were unable to meet the ongoing maintenance costs and the death duties payable when Sir Charles Harpur-Crewe died in 1981. The National Trust have decided not to restore the property but to maintain it and preserve it in its present state as a time capsule and as an example of the decline of the English country house.
