Class 73 on the sleeper, Inverness station
This is probably one of the first times a Class 73 electro-diesel locomotive has visited Inverness. It is hauling the Caledonian Sleeper service, along with a Class 67 locomotive, numbers 73967 and 67007.
The Class 73 was built in the 1960s, designed for use on the third-rail electrified routes in the south of England. They also had a small diesel engine, for running on non-electrified routes. In recent years, GB Railfreight have had a number of these re-engineered, with more powerful diesel engines fitted, now designated as Class 73/9. GB Railfreight plan to use 6 of these for hauling the sleeper services north of Edinburgh, they have been repainted in this "midnight teal" livery.
