NS4477 : Shallow quarry pit

taken 8 years ago, 3 km from Milton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Shallow quarry pit
Shallow quarry pit
Filling up most of the width of the foreground of this image is a shallow pit. It is only on account of the light covering of snow that it is at all discernible in the photograph; the patchy snow cover in the interior can be contrasted with the unbroken layer of snow on its near side.

This shallow pit appears to be an outlier of the system of tracks and quarries mentioned in the end-note. There are other small inconspicuous pits nearby. Tracks (NS4378 : Old braided track) lead east, to this area, from the northern end of Black Wood; other pits beside those tracks are apparent on satellite imagery: for example, at NS43387789.
Network of old limestone industry tracks :: NS4379

A very extensive network of ancient tracks on the moors in West Dunbartonshire links old quarries, ruined lime-kilns, and other sites connected with the local limestone-burning industry, which flourished in the 18th century. See Link for a Geograph article about the network, and LinkExternal link for an annotated satellite view of it.
