Temple of Ancient Virtue, Stowe Park
Temple of Ancient Virtue, Stowe Park
Grade I listed by William Kent (1685-1748) in 1734. A rotunda, patterned after the Temple of Vesta at Tivoli but using the Ionic order rather than the Corinthian. Inside are four niches for full-length statues of Homer, Socrates, Lycurgus, and Epaminondas, chosen as the greatest poet, philosopher, law-giver, and general of ancient Greece.
