On the steps of Tate Britain
On the steps of Tate Britain
The classical portico of the gallery previously known at the Tate. It was built on the site of Millbank prison and was opened on 21 July 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art, later named after its sponsor Sir Henry Tate. In 2000 it became Tate Britain to distinguish it from the new Tate Modern.
