The Double Bridge over the River Arun
The Double Bridge over the River Arun
When the Guildford & Horsham Railway was built, the line to the station at Rudgwick was on a steep gradient. The Inspecting Officer was unhappy about this because of the risk of a train running away down the slope, so he insisted that the gradient be eased. To achieve this meant raising the level of the line over a considerable distance including the Arun bridge. The solution there was to build a new bridge over the top of the old one, which now functioned as a buttress for the taller structure.
