TF0307 : Hospital gatehouse

taken 12 years ago, near to Stamford, Lincolnshire, Great Britain

Hospital gatehouse
Hospital gatehouse
Stamford hospital lies behind this wall but this entrance is not used. The plaque (right) indicates that this is the only remaining portion of the House of Whitefriars 1285-1539. Richard II had a lodge here in the 14th century.

Update 2013. I'm informed that research indicates that this may not be the Whitefriars gatehouse, despite what the plaque says. Bob Harvey's shared description below gives more details.
Whitefriars or Greyfriars
Stamford had four or five houses of Friars, including the Carmelites (Whitefriars) and the Franciscans (Greyfriars).

This gatehouse is a scheduled ancient monument, and English Heritage refers to it in that listing as Whitefriars Gate (1). A nearby plaque describes it by the same name TF0307 : Whitefriars gatehouse plaque
However in the 1970s scholars decided that this attribution was incorrect, and that this gatehouse belonged to the Greyfriars (2).

The plaque adds confusion, because it is known that Richard II held court at Greyfriars, where his mother was buried.(3)

In short, we cannot really know which Friary was located here, but the Whitefriars attribution is at least challenged with good reason.
