North Bridge Repairs
North Bridge Repairs
This is North Bridge - the middle of three such similar lifting bridges on the tidal River Hull (the others are Drypool Bridge just to the south and downstream of here and Sutton Road Bridge several miles upstream). Relatively few lifts are done these days as commercial river traffic on this waterway is now minimal. There is usually plenty of room for small pleasure craft to sail under these bridges without the need for them to be lifted.

North Bridge is currently in this position to facilitate painting of the huge counterweight and for general repairs. Of note, the four brackets several feet below the clock, where the cable support anchorages were for trolley bus wires last used in 1964 and they are still there to this day!
