The ferry docks in East Cowes (ie the other side of the river from Cowes) and this is only a few hundred yards from this viewpoint.
The coast in the distance is that of the mainland, Hampshire, in the vicinity of Buckler's Hard on the banks of the Beaulieu River; historically, Buckler's Hard is famed as the place where some of the ships of Nelson's fleet were built.
