SE5548 : Lych gate of St Nicholas, Askham Bryan
taken 8 years ago, near to Askham Bryan, York, England
The Church of St Nicholas in Askham Bryan is a Grade 1 listed building of Norman origin, built in the 12th century (with a small bell tower added in the 17th century). It is constructed of magnesian limestone ashlar and sandstone rubble with a plain tile roof. The arched porch and east wall are apparently part of the original structure. The east wall contains 3 slit windows, and above them is an oval window, known as ‘Vesica Piscis’. This represents the Greek word for fish, a traditional Christian symbol, and a reference to Jesus’ words to Simon Peter and his brother Andrew in the Bible (Matthew 4:19) “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men”.
