Kings Cross Signals
Kings Cross Signals
Pre-Electrification signalling at Kings cross. 31403 waits patiently to take a train of empty coaching stock out of the station. At the time that this photo was taken all long distance trains were locomotive hauled. Thus to get from the stabling point (behind the locomotive on the left) to a train a great deal of shunting back and forth was required, all controlled by the Shunt signals - the circular ones on the gantry. Normal departures were controlled by the Red and green lights above. The second set of signals beyond cleared the train into Copenhagen Tunnel. The rectangular boxes above each signal had roller-blinds that turned to display a code, such as F2, to tell the driver which track the train was routed to.
