Limestone quarry in Hetchell Wood
Limestone quarry in Hetchell Wood
Hetchell Wood is of geological interest because here the carboniferous sandstones and grits meet the permian limestones. The actual unconformity between the two rocks is masked by soils and vegetation, but at this point close to the top of the slope the permian [or 'magnesian'] limestones are exposed in an old quarry. The permian limestones run in a band all the way from Derbyshire to the coast of County Durham.
