The Devonshire Inn, Skipton
"The best C18 building in the town" (and therefore the best building in the town). Built for, and hence probably designed by, Lord Burlington, 1728-30, despite the "unPalladian" proportions of the two main storeys of equal height and some "rather coarse" detailing. Burlington was possibly more of a theoretician than practical Palladian. Grade II* listed.
Pevsner states that the building's original purpose is not clear, but it was an hotel by 1790. It is now a Wetherspoon pub.
