Geraldine Mary Harmsworth, Viscountess Rothermere, was the mother of Lord Rothermere, proprietor of the Daily Mail, who presented this land to the former London County Council in the 1920s for use as a public park; it was opened in 1934. It is now administered by the London Borough of Southwark.
