Station Hotel, Harrogate, 1981
This is Station Parade in 1981; Albert Street goes off on the left. The dark buildings in the distance, at the eastern end of Cambridge Street, have since been replaced by the Victoria Centre.
The Station Hotel was built in 1893, at the ends of Albert and James Streets, and, obviously, across the road from the Railway Station operated by the North Eastern Railway. On the left is the Co-op perhaps another nomination for one of Harrogate's worst buildings (if it is still there).
This was a quite pleasant covered parade of shops, nothing extravagant, just ordinary ones. Up to a few years prior to this photograph being taken a Mr Oddy had a greengrocery shop at the far end of this parade and he displayed his boxes of fruit etc outside.
The West Yorkshire bus from Knaresborough to Oatlands (route no.1 or 2?) made its Harrogate town centre stop just here; on the return journey its equivalent stop was adjacent to the Library a hundred yards or so away.
