Mile Post public house, Leeds Road, 1955
This is the Mile Post pub viewed from the top floor of 2A Mount Street. The sign on the side of the pub says 'Magnet Ales' and the car is a Standard 8; if I remember correctly this car had an unusual feature, a boot that did not open.
Leeds Road is on the left and Mount Street, with the street light still operated with gas, on the right. The pub must date from about 1930. It has green slates, probably from Borrowdale, on its roof and, unusually, is not built with the local Millstone Grit that would have given it a dirty black colour for the walls.
The building in the background is St Mark's Parochial Hall, now demolished and replaced by apartments (flats); the entrance to the Hall was in Tewit Well Road (well away from the pub!).
