Malthouse to the rear of 23 Church Street, Ashbourne
Grade II Listed former malthouse of about 1785 built for Thomas or his son John, Hensworth, maltsters and victuallers. Thomas Hemsworth was a local farmer who also owned 3 inns in the Town. Malting was a difficult process and was highly taxed but lucrative trade. In summer, when malt could not be produced, this building complex was used as a rope-walk for rope making and tanning. The only remaining one of seven possibly eight or nine such buildings in the town. The decline in Ashbourne's malting trade caused a fall from seven in 1846 to four in 1857. Along with the many coaching inns malting and tanning provided much of the towns wealth. The stone base at the rear of the building suggest it was built on, or was an extension of, an earlier malthouse.
