Allowing tall vessels to pass through the harbour, the bascule bridge was completed in 1930 and replaced a swing bridge constructed in 1824. Due to increasing demand, it now opens at two hourly intervals. It is owned by Dorset County Council and operated by Weymouth Harbour staff. There are 17 such bridges in the country, the most famous one being Tower Bridge in London. It is Grade II listed.
