2002 : Trent & Mersey Canal near Anderton
Taken from Soote Hill Bridge, Anderton Lift is just beyond the far bend.
Repair work being carried out by British Waterways during 2002. Pressure from underground water builds up during the winter forcing its way through the bed of the canal, during summer months water pressure falls and canal water leaks out through the resulting fissures leading to a breach and flooding.
The bed of the canal is removed and replaced with quarry scrapings, this is covered by a permeable membrane (the white stuff) then an impermeable membrane (the black stuff) and finished off with a layer of concrete.
