Between 1938 and 1945 the Scottish Youth Hostels Association had a hostel in this "4-storey mansion" (the ground slopes away steeply at the back, so this handbook description is partly true) at Berryhill, one mile from Lindores. Large house properties were relatively uncommon at this time with the SYHA, compared with the YHA in England and Wales.
