Castell y Bere was originally a Welsh castle (as opposed to English castles built in Wales such as Harlech and Caernarfon). It was built circa 1221 by Llewelyn The Great but fell to the English in 1283. It has lain disused since the very late 13th century after being occupied by the English for just a few years.

Just visible through the trees are some of the buildings of the hamlet of Llanfihangel-y-pennant.
