Old Quarries
This is the eastern end of low level at Stags Fell Quarry. The mainly open cast quarries were worked from two distinct levels due to faulting in the sandstone.
The height of quarrying was between 1884 and 1895, when over 300 tons of flags were produced per year. The flags were worked and dressed on site then carried to the roadside by means of a small tramway, they were then loaded on to carts and either delivered locally, or sent to the station at Hawes. Many mills in the West Riding were clad with "Yorkshire Slate" from Wensleydale.
