Ponies shading at Smugglers' Road car park, New Forest
These ponies are 'shading' on the lawn next to the Smugglers' Road car park - this involves standing very still in an open breezy location so that the flies are less of a nuisance in the heat of the day. By standing here they get the breeze that has blown across the gravel of the car park. The wooden posts in the foreground are known as "dragons' teeth", and are there to keep vehicles off the heathland. They are nothing to do with the legend of the dragon that lived on Castle Hill (in the background).
