In the mid-13th century, seafaring merchants from across Northern Europe combined to form the Hanseatic League to pursue their shared economic interests. Hull was one of several ports in England with which they traded. In 2012 Kingston upon Hull joined the new HANSE, a partnership of over 180 places across Northern Europe which were originally part of the medieval League.

On 14 May 2016, the city held a mid-13th century themed festival in medieval High Street to celebrate International Hanse Day. More information: LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link )
