Pony on the road across Vales Moor, New Forest
Pony on the road across Vales Moor, New Forest
This road leads from Knaves Ash to Little Castle Common, across Vales Moor. The pony standing on the road is 'shading', which means more than standing in the shade. Although to a motorist it might not seem a good idea for the pony to stand in the road, it is breezy and free from vegetation so there are less annoying flies in the muggy heat of a summer afternoon. The risk of motor vehicle collisions with commoners' stock is one of the reasons for the 40mph speed limit on the unfenced New Forest roads.
