Boundary fence on Knaves Ash barrow, New Forest
Boundary fence on Knaves Ash barrow, New Forest
This mound on a mound is a ditchless Bronze Age barrow near Knaves Ash, originally called "Kaveneburgh" in Edward I's perambulations dated 1289 (according to Hampshire Treasures). The barrow defines the northern end of a straight section of parish boundary whose southern end is several miles away at Lugden Barrow. To the left of the fence is Ringwood parish, and to the right Burley. It also marks the western edge of the Crown lands of the New Forest, although the modern "access land" boundary is a little further to the west following the edge of the heathland, and the national park boundary is off to the west in the Avon valley. The barbed wire top strand of the fence seems a little unnecessary, since there are gaps in the fence either side of the barrow.
