Nocton Hall

The Jacobean mansion of the Ellys family was destroyed by fire in 1834 and rebuilt by architect William Shearburn for the 1st Earl of Ripon in 1841. The grade II listed hall was used as a convalescent home for wounded American officers during WW1 and as an RAF hospital for much of WW2. It continued as an RAF hospital until 1983 when it was sold, later becoming a nursing home until the mid 1990s when the business failed. After standing empty and vandalised for several years the hall was mysteriously gutted by fire on 24th October 2004 and has remained a decaying ruin with an uncertain future ever since
