Parish boundary marker on Knaves Ash barrow, New Forest
Parish boundary marker on Knaves Ash barrow, New Forest
This stone parish boundary marker sits on top of a ditchless Bronze Age barrow near Knaves Ash, originally called "Kaveneburgh" in Edward I's perambulations dated 1289 (according to Hampshire Treasures). On this face of the stone (the Ringwood parish side) there are carved some letters and numbers, possibly 1888. The other side (the Burley parish side) has no inscription, and the side has been painted white.

The barrow that the stone stands on defines the northern end of a straight section of parish boundary, whose southern end is several miles away at Lugden Barrow. The parish boundary also marks the western edge of the Crown lands of the New Forest, although the modern "access land" boundary is a little further to the west following the edge of the heathland, and the national park boundary is off to the west in the Avon valley. The area of boggy heath to the west of the parish boundary is Kingston Great Common NNR (national nature reserve).
