Rocky track
At this point the track suddenly steepens as it twists through a rock-strewn patch of steepening hillside. This appears to be an area of igneous rock (microgabbro or dolerite) outcrop, which can be seen in the left of the image, shedding boulders shattered by glacial action. The igneous rock is probably the reason for the steepening hillside, as it is more resistant to erosion than the adjacent mudstones and tuffs. Both rock types are Ordovician (Caradoc) in age.
