St Botolph (Botwulf), an Anglo-Saxon saint of East Anglian origin, was particularly seen as a patron of travellers. For that reason, the four churches dedicated to him in the medieval City of London were located at places of departure, where prayers could be offered for a safe journey (or alternatively prayers of thanks given for a safe arrival): at Bishopsgate, Aldgate, Aldersgate, and on the Thames quayside at Billingsgate. (The first three survive; the fourth was not rebuilt after the Great Fire in 1666.)
