Portencross Castle, Portencross
Portencross Castle, Portencross
Portencross Castle was rebuilt in the 14th century on a rock promontory at the bottom of the hill and overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Previously it stood on Auld Hill above. A taller tower was added to the original tower house, with a vaulted first storey. A kitchen was added in the new tower, as well as a second kitchen on the first floor. A gale stripped off the roof in 1739, but the building survived due to the strength of the walls, although the top of the tower is now crumbling. It appears to be undergoing restoration.

The castle is believed to be the last mainland resting place for many former Scottish kings.

Little Cumbrae Island can just be seen.
