The Far From The Madding Crowd public house
This pub in Friars' Entry, off Magdalen Street, was opened as part of the redevelopment of the Debenham's department store. It is a free house, with open mic nights, art exhibitions and poetry readings.

The concept originated with a larger-than-life Irishman, Noel Reilly, who was formerly landlord of the SP5007 : The Jude the Obscure Pub, Jericho. Noel sold the Far From to new management (who stuck with his ideals) but unfortunately he subsequently fell out with them to the extent that he was barred from crossing the threshold of the pub.

Update: sadly Noel suffered a stroke in 2007 and died in September 2008 - see his obituary in the Oxford Times published on 19.09.2008 LinkExternal link - and the pub finally closed its doors in January 2015.

For a wider view of the pub in its heyday, see Bill Nicholls' SP5106 : Far From the Madding Crowd.
