Mitchell and West Nile streets from The Lighthouse
View from the water tower viewing gallery. The first short section is Mitchell Street, with Gordon Street running off to the left. Stretching into the distance beyond the junction is West Nile Street.
Tam's superb photo shows the warehouse designed by the architect John Baird for the firm of A Gardner, cabinet makers. It was built in 1855-6. The building remained in use by Gardners until 1985, when the firm was taken over by an Edinburgh company, Martin & Frost. Known as "The Iron Building", it is the oldest completely cast iron fronted commercial building in Britain. It was refurbished in 2000 and now operates as a pub.
